        IF I MAY (since I am dying at how little I can talk about anything else rn) I know there wasn’t a lot to go on but man I was SO surprised some people thought the dad was like, A Voice Of Reason when he showed up? absolutely nothing he’s done has been Kind-Coded but I really thought it would be a giveaway that the mother is the only one we saw interacting with the kiddos before now, even at church where all of them should ostensibly be together, and the bit earlier where junie said jonesey pretends “to mom” rather than to both their parents when he needs to squirm out of being at church. It’s less clear than those things, but the way the mom lets herself be cowed by other authority even regarding her own children and how nervous her body language usually is, AND that they’re not at all physically interacting like a married couple in these pages, I thought it would be more immediately obvious this guy sucks lmao. Aside from the family itself, I was hoping the sexism inherent in the religion might nudge people in the direction that this is probably not a great place to not be a straight guy, that sort of superiority complex isn’t healthy for anyone. I think this ended up being another case of weird observational skills I’ve picked up from growing up in such a bizarre repressed ecosystem that I forget other people don’t necessarily have laksjdf
        
        Anyway if all the rest of it fails, a kid who just watched her brother die reacting with “dad’s going to be mad at me for this” is. Not indicative of a healthy family dynamic probably. This isn’t a major plot point or anything so I’m not that worried about peoples’ interpretations being any certain thing, just one of those things I thought was really clear that turned out to be murky. Makin comics is weird sometimes

        I definitely noticed that his response to one of his kids going missing/DYING was to scold his wife. Like she’s not handling it super well but it would be weird if she was and it’s kind of weird that he is. Like she’s closer to it even tho they’re his kids too.
