We’re back to Actual Comics on Friday, despite this saying this is only one of two pages! Generally I wouldn’t feel the need to clarify this, but if you happen to be uninterested in the journal page updates and thought another one was coming this week after the schedule’s been so haphazard this month I figure you’d appreciate knowing more comic is on the way.

Social justice is easy when the gods are trying to kill everyone equally? It’s a new take.

It does puzzle me though, how religions can still be as random in their beliefs if the gods are quite definitely around and apparently largely a bunch of arseholes, it feels very Greek in it’s basis.

  Sort of Greek yeah! At least from the angle that there’s kind of a pantheon of gods hanging out somewhere that people are scared of.
  
  My justification for different religions and beliefs in KC is pretty much the same explanation for different beliefs in real life. You can show people evidence one way or another all you want, but there will still be facets of people who could look a god in the face and be skeptical or who will insist God Makes Rain no matter how many times you explain the water cycle. Also, like, Right Now On Earth In 2017 medical science is as advanced as it’s ever been but people still think wearing rocks around their neck will heal them. Humans are just a superstitious lot haha.
  
  It also has a lot to do with where a person was raised, which I think I’ve brought up before? Ulrich grew up in a densely populated urban area similar to Decodenn, where there’s a lot more diversity and a lot fewer tain incidents, so to him, seeing “proof” of monsters online or hearing stories would register about the way seeing “proof” of Slenderman or alien spaceships does to us. For Phineas, who grew up in a rural area that was much more at-risk for destruction by different things and existed close enough to the sprawl that monsters likely wandered right into town, there was never a question whether gods or spiritual stuff existed, but she did decide on her own they weren’t worth a religion. Naturally there are enormous differences in culture and lifestyle in different areas, and over time all of these places have developed their own unique relationship with the unknown.

  I don’t know where, just that I’m familiar with the idea from a science fiction standpoint that suddenly the black/gay/muslim–even the hated libertarian–human looks like a brother compared to the creepy spider things coming from space. Watchmen kind of exploited the idea. (Not to take away from its use here, just a note that it’s a fairly well explored idea. Also the idea of boot camp drill sergeants–give them something to hate so they forget individual differences and unite.)

    Watchmen was an example I had ready to hand out if someone came along who didn’t quite understand the idea haha. But yeah! This facet of humanity is used a lot even in real life, often for less than kind things, but I think the concept holds up enough for me to stand by it in my goofy anime.
    
    Frankly, I just wanted to assert that this wasn’t another goddamn Avatar lmao. We got enough of those. KC word of god is everybody gets along because the author is super bored by the concept of yet another story about either robots or monster folks being institutionally oppressed and having to rise up so we can all learn a lesson, and I feel like as a person with the privileges I happen to have it’s not my place to get into some of the social aspects of those stories anyway. And regarding the topics where it IS my place to talk about it, like sexuality or feminism, mannnn I’d rather just be able to write a regular romance or let girls be strong than have to waste time portraying the same bleak bullshit we have to deal with in real life. There’s plenty of mean stuff happening in this comic already pff.
