This is an information overload for character background, I’m counting at least 6 new facts on this page alone.

One question. Is the cat special? Obviously I’m looking at the 3rd eye, but also it’s eyes look a bit…starry.

Woah, overload. “You’ve never exactly been /discrete/ with your disdain for commanders”…. but isn’t Jocasta a commander herself? Is this going to be revealed later on in the story?

  Nope, she’s a fire wizard or something, just like Hazard is an ice wizard.

    I’m confused. Okay. I thought it said somewhere she was a commander.

      Maybe because she owned Phin’s coat? But the coat isn’t special in and of itself it’s special because she decided it is.

        Page 269, “Jocasta Hubris, Walker, Witch Doctor, “The Screaming Dawn”” I think I thought walker=commander, something about how those both seem to be “elemental” things.
        
        In that they both command their respective element, and embody it in physical form somewhat.

        It might help to think about it like, there’s a great big bunch of energy/magic/aether/whatever in the middle, and the different groups, being commanders, walkers, wizards, other stuff, all are different reflections of the same sort of thing. It’s a little more nuanced than that so don’t take that to heart TOO much, but maybe that’ll help a liiiiittle?
        
        The magic system is vague and weird because I think magic is vague and weird and it makes for a confusing story sometimes, I’m sorry haha. All the important distinctions will be made apparent when they’re relevant!

        Real life is confusing too, and the roles aren’t always clear either. Human life is vague and weird. Imho.

        Yeah! That’s pretty much how I’ve always tried to approach storytelling, sometimes weird shit happens for no reason and you don’t get a real answer to something because there isn’t one.

        But I also have no intention of using that as a crutch for sloppy storytelling and I hate stories that build up to something then “leave it open to reader interpretation” pff. We ARE working towards something solid, I won’t leave you guys hanging.

        I like the complexity, I’m just being difficult because I don’t want to wait to read more. XD Reminds me of a few different series. Young Wizards, AVTLA, Vlad Taltos, and others.

Yeah. She was already dying, we’d guess that. But, WHY?

And you’re wrong, Raven, any eight year old is quite fit to make decisions about their own lives. All the more when they’ve known rough times in their lives. If you hadn’t spoiled your daughter so much you would know. Or maybe you know alright and are just making Jocasta feel as bad as you can.

Anyway, this is a great page, I wonder if there is more coming or if we’ve reached the apex of this chapter…

And. I deeply agree with Jo. It wasn’t fair. It never is. Praise the comics where anything is possible. And their makers. For making us dream.

  She might’ve gotten in the way of Gideon, I guess? Gideon seems to embody something similar to light and fire, but different I’d say. Radiation maybe?
  
  Also, sunflower in the bottom corner signifies the end of the chapter, so we’ve got more exposition to come.

    Hmm, no, I don’t think Gideon had a part in the reason she was dying for in the first place. I could be wrong, but Phineas… Hmm, well, we’ll see.

so many questions! Trying my best not to ask them because i know they will come up eventually but what in the world happened little pheneas? Did she know gidion or Jo before everything happened? Or did they just stumble upon a dying little girl and try to help her?

  Pretty sure we just established that Jo is Phin’s mother.

    I could swear i read somewhere that phin said something like, “you and gidion found each other, and then you found me” not really language for someone who was born into the family. (not denying that phin is jo’s daughter, just…not biologically?)
