Huh. I don’t understand everything here but Ulrich looks like he does.

that does seem to be a recurring thing doesn’t it
his hair is full of secrets

I find Phineas’ moralizing here to be rather unendearing. Ray was a horrible human being who got, in a very literal sense, exactly what he deserved. The fact it was from his superior is immaterial. Also, what subordinate at his level would not have suffered some sort of serious punishment for setting an entire town on fire for personal reasons, an act that likely would have been contrary to his superior’s intent? I don’t remotely feel bad for the guy. While his killer had unjust reasons for her actions, justice was certainly meted out nonetheless.

Being the author, I feel a little leery of saying that there’s a “right” way to feel about a certain passage (especially in the comment section) but I WILL say these are astute observations and Ulrich probably agrees with you. Given that both of them had no problem killing him not two pages ago, I’d posit that her offense is coming from somewhere else. but u didn’t hear it from me

Upon further thought I the matter, I have come to the conclusion that our dear Phineas was not objecting to his death, or even necessarily that it was Eisse that killed him, but rather the circumstances behind why she killed him. At that point in time, he was her subordinate, and posed no threat to her, so she had no reason to kill him, let alone with the cruelty and callousness she did. At least as far as Phineas saw it. It really shows how green behind the ears she is when it comes to the realities of being a leader, especially when it comes to leading a group larger than your immediate circle of friends. She may not yet understand that a follower does not equate a friend. Nor that does the fact that a person follows you does not mean they are useful, or simply not detrimental to your purposes. Ray at this point had far outlasted his usefulness, and being as callous as her father is, Eisse disposed of what she saw as trash at best, and a liability at worst. I believe that is what happened here, and why Phineas objected so strongly. Sorry about the wall of text. ?

Walls of text are fine! I can’t always comment on them too much because I don’t want to inadvertently spoil something, but theories about character motivations are some of my favorite things to read hehe

BTW, unrelated: I usually end up glossing over character names (I had to look them all up for my comments). That being said: “Cold Hazard” and “Eisse (Ice) Hazard”? I lol’d. A bit on the nose perhaps? ? Are they just really bad at aliases?
