I think this is the third re-read of this scene for me. Don’t know that I really noticed it before, but he really comes off as convinced that he’s doing “the right thing” or “the only intelligent possible thing” or something like that. Rather than “I’ll make Crow suffer NO MATTER WHAT” or some other such banal and one dimensionally evil motive. You can really see his side of the argument, and it reveals the effort you’ve put in to making the characters into real, thinking, feeling things.
